There are a lot of things a student can do in Newcastle. There is always some activity being planned in this city, where you can go and meet new people and make new friends.
Newcastle is the biggest city in the North East of England with a population of 259,600. The city has a Metro system which makes it fairly easy to get around the city. It is famous for it’s beginning as a coal export port and in the 19th century, the city became an important steel and shipbuilding centre. Currently, Newcastle is more famous for its nightlife and is currently known as the ‘Nightlife Capital’!
SHOPPING
If students want to go out for shopping, they will certainly have a lot to choose from in this lively city. There´s is something for everyone, for the most sophisticated of tastes and all budgets from pocket money to big spenders.
A nice place to go shopping is the Metro Centre, located 3 miles south west of Newcastle upon Tyne on the A1 road west of Gateshead. Metro Centre is very nice, as all the shops under one roof!
There isn’t only a huge range of shops but there are also leisure facilities such as:
A UCI cinema, consisting of eleven screens and then you have the Megabowl (bowling and quasar laser - www.megabowl.co.uk). Besides this, there are a lot of places to eat out. There is a food court as well as restaurants and known places such as McDonalds and KFC.
There are so many shops that it’s hard to see all of them. There is also a Red Mall where there is a fairly new Debenhams store. In the Mediterranean village you get a strong feeling of being on holiday and definitely lives up to its name.
PARKS
There are a lot of parks where lots and lots of (international) students go to to relax and to enjoy the natural environment. They are also a very good way to read, whether it is in your study book or not!
Belsay Hall and Gardens
Here students´ll be able to explore two historic buildings. One well-preserved late-14th century tower house as well as a neo-classical house. These are both linked by a charming sunken garden which spreads over more than 30 acres of landscaped grounds.
Nuns Moor Park
The Nuns Moor Park is located about 1km northwest of the Newcastle city centre in between Ponteland Road and Nuns Moor Road. The land on which the park stands and the bordering moor were once property of the Nuns of St Mary and St Bartholomew, therefore the name Nuns Moor Park.
Jesmond Dene
Jesmond Dene is located 1 mile east of Newcastle upon Tyne, just off the A1058 Newcastle to Tynemouth Coast Road. Jesmond Dene is a Victorian Park set in the Valley of the River Ouse. It was conceived and planted by Lord Armstrong who lived at his estate at Cragside, Northumberland. The park has a pet’s corner, a waterfall, a watermill and a very beautiful planting, which can be observed from a network of bridges and paths.
