City and metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear in the northeastern part England on the River Tyne opposite Gateshead, 17 km from the North Sea, with a population of approximately 259,600. It is the administrative centre of Tyne and Wear and is a centre for retail, commerce, communications, and the arts. Newcastle first began to trade in coal in the 13th century, and has been an important centre for shipbuilding and till 80´s. In this city, you’ll also find engineering (including offshore technology) brewing, food processing, as well as the manufacturing of electronics.

Parts of a castle are still preserved which has been built by Henry II in 1177 on the site of an even older castle, dating from 1080.  Several landmarks include the St Nicholas cathedral, formerly known as the parish church.
Museums and galleries feature the Laing Art Gallery, which is the North East's principal art gallery with an interesting collection of paintings, watercolors, costume, silver, glass, pottery, and sculptures; the Military Vehicle Museum, located in the last remaining pavilion of the 1929 North East Coast Exhibition; the Newcastle Discovery Museum; the Hancock Museum; and the International Centre for Life. The quayside area, underwent restoration in the 1980s and 1990s with its historic buildings, and became a fashionable waterside area, principally known for its nightlife.
